Film Noir Trailer – Task 1: Brainstorm

We have to shoot and film a trailer based on the game ‘L.A. Noir’. This was my brainstorm that I created for the trailer. I normally try and brainstorm at least three ideas, but two ideas were plenty as we were working as a group. Unfortunately, our group didn’t choose any of these ideas to carry forward and develop further.

This coursework was a group project involving; Jordan, Liam, Victoria and Adil. Here are their blogs:

Victoria: N/A

Idea 1 – Traditional cops and robbers.

Shoot a chase scene. The robber robs a handbag from a woman, and the detective gives chase. The robber runs and pulls out objects to block the detective’s path. One scene could include: sliding over a table and pulling it down to block the detective’s path. The chase scene ends in a hostage situation.

2 second shot. The detective could be holding a gun prop (Tommy gun) and rushing into a building/sliding into cover. Shouting “This is your last chance!”

2 second shot. The detective Breaks down a door and rushes in.

Slow Pan establishing shot. Walking through a crime scene. Taking notes. Fake blood running down the pavement. False leads, like a gun, or a knife with fake blood on it.

Voice over recordings to give a narrative of the story.

Interview of the suspect. Intense, close-up, drama shots. Dolly zoom can be used.  Tense music playing through the background. Shouting of both actors. Accusations of the case. Example:

Dect – “You hid the money and went to sleep. But when your wife found the bags, you went berserk, slapping the broad across the face.”

Sus – “No! I didn’t do that”

Dect – “Then you ran to your car and drove away, hitting the bitch, killing her in the driveway”

Sus – (Stands up in anger) “Fuck you detective! You have no proof!”

Dect – “Do we need any more proof? Your own son saw what happened! (“My son”) Witnesses in broad daylight, the blood of your lover on your very own vehicle! Tell us the truth!”

Sus – “My son… My son! Where is he?” (More choked up and calmer)

Dect – “A foster home, and you won’t see him until your time is up Mr Delby”

Police Siren sounds.

Fake awards of the game. In a bright noire-style shot.

Idea 2 – Vanishing money.

This idea is an expansion of the interview idea in the first idea.

Four scenes will be included.

Scene one. A bystander [husband] runs into a gym bag in the middle of an alleyway. He checks the bag and finds it is full of money. Then, two goons [Henchmen #1 & #2] burst through the barred door, holding submachine guns, shooting back through the door they came from. They also hold similar bags full of money. The bystander [husband] ducks out of view with the bag and overhear the two goons that they threw the bag out of the window. They search but quickly give up when they hear the police.

Scene two. The bystander [husband] returns home late, with the look of a guilty man, and sneaks the money bag in the basement before his wife [wife] finds out he is late. He successfully puts it out of sight, but the guilt on his face makes his wife intrigued. The husband goes back to the basement and finds his suppressed pistol.

Scene three. A knock on the door is heard and the husband answers it. The two goons enter the house forcefully, but the guy shoots one and has a fight with the other, making them run away.

Scene four. It is morning now, and the wife goes into the basement to find the secret. She finds the money bag and pockets as much as she can. The husband slaps the wife in the face and runs away with the money, not trusting her gold-digging wife anymore.

Scene five. He gets into the car, fuelled with rage, manhandles his 10 year old kid who is in the way. The wife is in tears now, but chases after him with his pistol he dropped for answers. The husband revs up the car, but the wife stands in front of the car with the gun in her hand. Bystanders are now looking onto the scene and are calling the police. The husband drives, playing chicken with his wife and hits her. When the wife gets hit, the gun fires two shots, puncturing the car’s tires and making the husband crash into a wall.

Scene six. Interrogation scene — Same as above —
